NVC Family Fun Day
Building Peace in Families with Nonviolent Communication
- How can we nurture peace and cooperation in our families?
- How can we better listen to each other?
- How can we talk so our children are more likely to hear us?
Join us for a fun-filled day of family activities and learning! We invite
everyone to explore a space free of blame, judgement and coercion, where
everyone's needs matter.

What is nonviolent communication (NVC), and why an NVC Family Fun Day?
- NVC is a way to communicate that creates a deeper understanding and connection, and that reduces the likelihood of escalation.
- In the course of teaching NVC, we heard from parents who have asked us how they could bring this approach to their families.
- This workshop takes the ideas of NVC and presents them in a way that’s engaging for young people.
- This will be a shared experience that offers new approaches everyone can use at home (and beyond!)
- More about NVC...
What will the day look like?
- Ben and Anne-Line will be co-facilitating the day.
- There will be a range of activities (e.g. role plays, drawing, games) around better understanding each other and dealing with conflict. Some will be in small groups, others will involve whole group discussions. And there will be plenty of time for breaks and free play.
- We will make use of the venue's beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces, weather permitting.
Indicative agenda:
- Getting in the zone for understanding each other
- Introducing a simple process to work through conflict
- Why do we do what we do? The concept of needs.
- An NVC-based approach to family dynamics
What if my child gets disengaged and starts running around / making fart noises / tapping their feet?
- Family Fun Day will be a safe zone for everyone. Kids and adults will all be encouraged to do what makes them feel comfortable throughout the day.
- If someone doesn’t want to participate in an activity, needs to rest or wants to go outside for a run… they’ll be welcome to do so at any time.
- Two NVC-trained support people with professional experience working with children will be on hand to help keep children safe and occupied.
What do we need to bring?
- Please bring your own lunch (snacks will be provided).
- Wear comfortable clothing, noting there will be opportunities to spend time outside in the garden and go out to the river if the weather is nice.
How can we prepare the kids for the day?
- It might be useful for children to know this is a special family experience. There will be other families with kids, and everyone will try new ways of talking and listening to each other.
- There will be lots of games and activities, and free time! Children will be free to participate or do something else if they don’t feel like it.
- It won’t be like at school where we have to sit quietly and listen. It will be a place where nobody will be told they’re right or wrong, good or bad.
